SPM drives a pet food manufacturing company EPA approvals to establish its production factory in Dandenong South, 100 metres from residents.

Lyka Pet Foods Pty Ltd (Lyka) was founded in 2018 and manufactures lightly cooked meat and vegetable pet food that is vacuum sealed and distributed to end customers as a frozen package. Lyka uses human-grade ingredients and manufacturing processes. Lyka currently operates out of a site in Wetherill Park, Sydney, NSW.  Lyka proposes to construct a pet food manufacturing facility within the existing building envelope in Dandenong South. The new Dandenong South site will replicate the existing process undertaken at Lyka’s Sydney site, with some differences in process technology for higher automation.

The chosen site for Lyka’s pet food manufacturing company was proposed 100 metres from residents.  Pet food manufacturing has been notorious for generating offensive odours and have historically been required by EPA to be significantly from sensitive land uses such as residents.

Lyka and its team of consultants approached SPM seeking support to establish the pet food manufacturing at the Dandenong South site, which is approximately 100 metres from residents.   than the EPA recommended buffer distance of 500 m to protect neighbours from odour and noise.

SPM worked with the company, design engineers, town planners and odour and noise specialists to create a development Iicence application that is currently being assessed by EPA Victoria.

Keys to compiling a comprehensive, fit for purpose EPA application included early community and EPA engagement, commitments to install best available techniques and technologies to control odour, and locating noisy equipment inside the building.  The application addressed EPA’s general environmental duty (GED) requirements, considered low frequency noise and committed to maintaining the highest operating standards and processing controls to avoid odour generation.
