Project Overview

Yumbah culitvates abalone in multiple locations across Australia to supply domestic and international markets with premium abalone. Yumbah’s ambitious and groundbreaking 500 tonne abalone farm in Portland, Victoria will be the largest in Australia. It is in its conception.

The Challenge

Yumbah required detailed and complex Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) including Marine Ecology, Water Quality modelling, Coastal Processes Assessment and Air Impact Assessments to enable Yumbah to secure the necessary Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approvals for the project. The project also required amendments to the Glenelg Shire Planning scheme to accommodate the facility within the coastal zone.

The Solution

SPM played a crucial role in securing environmental and planning approvals for Yumbah Aquaculture’s abalone farm development in Portland, Victoria.

Our role included:

  • Obtaining a Development Licence that allowed Yumbah to construct the abalone farm.
  • Coordinating several detailed Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to demonstrate to EPA that impacts from the abalone farm are acceptable.
  • Planning Scheme Amendments – SPM supported Harwood Andrews in at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and Planning Panels Victoria (PPV) to support the amendments process.
  • Stakeholder engagement – SPM implemented a proactive stakeholder engagement strategy with Government agencies, Traditional Owners and Community groups.

The Outcomes

Successful Approval – Yumbah secured the crucial works approvals from EPA . Yumbah also obtained the necessary amendments to the Planning Scheme to greenlight the facility.
