Project Overview

Resource’s E-Waste recycling facility in Derrimut, is Australia’s first and only alkaline and zinc carbon battery facility, with recovery rates among the highest in the world. ReSource set its sights on expanding into the broader e-waste challenge facing Australia.

The Challenge

To secure Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval for their operations, Resource needed to address potential environmental impacts associated with e-waste recycling at its facility. The submission of a Development Licence application, Environmental Impact Assessment and a Risk Management and Monitoring Program (RMMP) were all critical elements that formed their Development Licence application to EPA.

The Solution

By providing comprehensive environmental consulting services, SPM helped ReSource successfully navigate the EPA approval process and obtain the Development Licence for their new e-waste recycling facility. SPM’s key roles were:

  • Obtaining a Development Licence that e-waste recycling to commence at the Derrimut site.
  • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to evaluate environmental impact, noise, air quality, wastewater discharge and waste management risks.
  • Site-specific mitigation strategies to minimise environment and human health impacts from the site.
  • Emergency Response Plan was developed to address any potential incidents.
  • Best Practice Advice guidelines were developed and incorporated into the facility design to ensure operations aligned with industry standards and environmental regulations.
  • Ongoing compliance advice involved creating a comprehensive environmental monitoring plan to track the facility’s performance and ensure ongoing compliance with licence conditions.
  • Addressing the specific challenges of the E-Waste facility, including fire risk and hazardous waste management. This allowed ReSource to develop robust and appropriate procedures in compliance with regulations.
  • EPA liaison to ensure clear communication and regulatory requirements were met.

The Outcomes

Regulatory approvals secured – Re-Source successfully met all environmental compliance requirements, enabling e-waste recycling to commence.

Sustainable waste management – ReSource’s facility operates in an environmentally responsible manner, contributing to the circular economy and minimising the environmental impact of electronic waste.

SPM’s meticulous documentation, technical expertise, and effective communication successfully allowed Resource to obtain the necessary EPA approvals to commence operations.
